Action Alert: Please Ask Health and Government Operations Committee Members to SUPPORT HB1161 Which Protects Informed Consent to HPV Vaccination
TEXT OF HB1161 – Public Health – Human Papillomavirus Vaccine – Information and Informed Consent (Christina’s Law)
Requiring a health care provider, before each administration of a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, to provide an individual or an individual’s parent or guardian with a certain information sheet and obtain written consent on a certain form.
why icm SUPPORTS HB1161
- Most recipients of the HPV vaccine do not receive full information about the risks before consenting to vaccination. Currently, there are over 70,000 reports of adverse events from the HPV vaccine reported in VAERS, including 560 deaths. HB1161 would require healthcare providers to provide complete and accurate information on the risks and benefits of HPV vaccination before administering the vaccine to patients.
- Over 90% of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infections clear with no treatment or intervention. Rates of HPV-related cancers in the U.S. are low and protection from HPV infection conferred by HPV vaccines has never been adequately demonstrated.
- Cervical cancer is preventable with regular PAP screening, and women who receive the HPV vaccine still need to be screened yearly with PAP screening.
- There is evidence that subjects previously infected with HPV 16/18 strains who are subsequently vaccinated for HPV could thereby increase their risk of getting cervical cancer by 44.6%.
- In post-licensure safety surveillance, the VAERS reporting rate for Gardasil was 3x greater than that for all other vaccines combined.
